Individual counseling focuses on immediate or near-future concerns. This form of counseling may encompass career counseling and planning, grief after a loved one dies, or dealing with problems at a job before they become big. Individual counseling is a one-on-one discussion between the counselor and the client, who is the person seeking treatment. The two form an alliance, relationship, or bond that enables trust and personal growth.
Couples receive professional help for their relationship. They may be considering separation, seeking how to improve their communication skills, or improving intimacy and understanding. In couples counseling, the relationship is the focus, although each partner should also expect to focus on self-improvement and self-awareness.
Group counseling is counseling with multiple individuals facing a similar concern. The strength of group counseling is that if you have about ten people together facing the same or similar issues. Group counseling allows individuals in the group to act as a source of insight and support while reinforcing the idea that each individual is not the only one experiencing these problems. Group sessions include relapse prevention, life skills, job/career mentoring.
Interventions are scheduled for the purpose of getting an addict into treatment. Interventions are typically required when alcoholics and drug addicts have trouble admitting that they have a problem. Living in denial often defines their addiction. For this reason, an intervention may offer a substance abuser the best chance of getting help. The goal of any intervention for a substance abuser is to get the individual to admit they need help and get them to enter treatment.
Grief counseling is the process in which counselors assist individuals in coping with feelings of sadness, yearning, guilt, regret, and anger, among others. Some people may experience a sense of meaninglessness, and others can feel a sense of relief. Emotions are often surprising in their strength or mildness, and they can also be confusing, such as when a person misses a painful relationship. Grief counseling is not limited to the loss of someone's life.
Christian counseling is the foundation for applying God’s word to the heart. It is one avenue God can use to walk individuals through the process of healing and change. Christian Counseling is for anyone that wants to abide by the teachings and traditions of Christianity and desires to gain full reliance on God. There are many areas where Christian counseling can help. Some examples are depression, marital problems, family issues, addiction, and grief or loss of a loved one.
The Cycle of Addiction - This cycle can rotate on a variable basis. For example, binge users rotate through this cycle more slowly. Daily users may rotate through the cycle of addiction daily or several times throughout the day. This cycle can be arrested or stopped at any point after the addict or alcoholic makes a decision or is forced to get help. Sometimes, the consequences that arise (legal, financial, medical, or social) force the addict or alcoholic to stop using. However, in the absence of outside help, such as alcohol or drug detox followed by addiction treatment help, the substance abuse or addictive behavior is likely to return.
